Are cold spark machines fireworks?
No. A cold spark machine burns a titanium alloy granule to throw a controlled spark fountain. It contains no explosive and no pyrotechnic composition, so no South Australian pyrotechnician licence applies to it. Venue approval always does, and that is a separate question from the law.
Will it set off the venue's smoke alarms?
Cold spark produces no smoke, so it does not trigger an optical smoke detector the way a haze or smoke machine does. Dry ice sinks rather than rises, which is why it also stays below ceiling-mounted detectors. Glycol haze and smoke machines are the ones that trigger alarms, and they are the reason your venue's terms name smoke machines specifically.
My venue banned sparklers, candles and confetti. Can I still have anything?
Almost certainly yes. Those 3 bans exist for 3 unrelated reasons: cleaning cost, heritage fabric and fire alarm callout fees. A cold spark unit is not a naked flame, not a gas cylinder, not an explosive device and produces no debris and no fog, so it falls outside the literal wording of most Adelaide venue clauses. Do you hold a pyrotechnician licence?
No, and we will not imply otherwise. Everything on the effects list above runs without one under South Australian law. Outdoor fireworks displays, indoor close-proximity pyro and flame machines all require a licensed pyrotechnician, so those jobs are referred to a licensed South Australian operator instead of being quietly taken on.
What does it cost?
Verified Adelaide market pricing runs from $400 for 2 cold spark machines on 1 moment to about $1,875 for a full spark and dry ice package. Dry hire of a machine alone runs $150 to $170. The pricing page publishes the whole range with sources, and the cost guide explains what moves the number.
How far ahead do I need to book?
For a wedding, as soon as your venue is locked in, because good operators book out the October to November and March to April peaks first. For a proposal, we regularly work to a 2 week deadline, and occasionally to a few days. Outdoor fireworks are the exception: a licensed display needs a regulator notification at least 5 clear business days ahead plus a public notice 7 to 14 days before, so 4 to 6 weeks is the practical floor.
Do you travel outside Adelaide?
Yes. The Adelaide Hills, Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and the Fleurieu are all regularly serviced, and a travel fee applies past the metro area. Tell us the venue and the fee is quoted up front rather than appearing later.
