We read the effects clauses of 53 South Australian wedding venues on 10 August 2026. This page is every published policy in one place, the 41 venues that publish nothing at all, and the 3-cluster lens for reading any of it, including a venue we have not covered.
Ask 10 Adelaide wedding venues whether a cold spark machine is allowed and you get 10 different answers, most of them guesses. We stopped guessing. On 10 August 2026 we read the published hire conditions, wedding brochures and terms pages of 53 South Australian venues, from Adelaide Town Hall to the Barossa's smallest cellar door, and recorded exactly what each one says, with the source and the date attached.
12 of those venues publish something usable: a clause that bans, conditions or permits an effect. The other 41, listed in full further down, publish nothing at all. That absence is not a footnote. It is the single most useful thing anyone has published about this market, because it shows exactly where the guessing stops and the written question to the coordinator starts.
Every clause on this page falls into 1 of 3 recurring clusters, and understanding them is the fastest way to read any venue's fine print for yourself, including one we have not covered here. Cold spark machines sit outside all 3, which is the argument this whole page exists to support with evidence rather than assertion.
The lens: debris, naked flame, smoke detection, and the thing that is none of them.
Read enough South Australian hire conditions and the same 3 reasons for a ban keep reappearing, and none of them describe what a cold spark machine actually does.
Debris
Confetti, glitter, rice, bio-confetti and balloon releases. Adelaide Botanic Garden and Mount Lofty Botanic Garden both attach fines to this, and Partridge House bans it outright. The reason is cleaning cost and, for the gardens, wildlife.
Naked flame
Candles, sparklers, gas cylinders and any open flame. The Carrick Hill Pavilion brochure and the State Library's conditions of use ban this in near-identical wording, government-linked boilerplate built on heritage fabric and insurance.
Smoke detection
Smoke machines, haze and dry ice. Adelaide Town Hall and the Carrick Hill Pavilion both ban it, and the Pavilion's brochure explains why: it recovers the Metropolitan Fire Service false alarm call-out fee from the hirer if it is triggered.
A cold spark unit is none of the 3. It produces no debris, has no naked flame and emits no smoke an optical detector reads, which is why it clears clauses written to stop those 3 things. That is a reading of the wording, not a permission any of these venues have granted, and every venue page below says so rather than promising a yes. Hard ban published
Every one of the 3 clusters is closed off in writing: debris, naked flame and smoke or fog are all named.
Conditional yes
Not a flat no. Each sets a spec, a lead time or a written-permission gate instead of an unexplained ban.
Debris ban only
Confetti, petals and balloons are banned for cleaning and wildlife reasons. Flame and machine effects are simply not addressed.
Permits effects
Says yes to machine effects or fireworks outright, usually with a paid condition attached such as a fire warden.
Nothing published
No hirer effects clause exists, but each publishes adjacent material worth reading before you ask the coordinator anything.

41 more we checked. Every one publishes nothing at all.
These 41 were checked with the same effort as the 12 above: their own website, PDF terms and wedding brochure where 1 exists. None publish an effects policy, a fire or fog condition, or so much as a mention of sparklers or confetti. That silence is not permission and it is not a ban. It means the answer lives with whoever coordinates events there, unwritten, until a couple asks in writing and gets a written answer back.

Methodology: what counts as published, and what does not.
Every entry above paraphrases a clause we read directly on the venue's own domain or in its own PDF, on the date shown against that venue. We do not state a policy a venue has not published, and we do not present its silence as permission in either direction. Where a source was a supplier-managed profile or a search-indexed page rather than a clean fetch, that is disclosed on the venue's own page, and the detail is treated as indicative until the coordinator reconfirms it in writing.
"Published" means the couple themselves could find and read the same wording without asking anyone. A verbal answer at a wedding expo, a Facebook comment or a line in a real-wedding blog does not count, no matter how confident it sounds. Where that is genuinely the only material available, as with Sunnybrae Estate, the venue's page says so plainly rather than treating it as equivalent to a written clause.
Legal position stated as at 10 August 2026. South Australia's Explosives Act 1936 and the Explosives (Fireworks) Regulations 2016 are the operative law. The Explosives Act 2024 (SA) received assent on 19 September 2024 but had not commenced as at that date, and it will change licence names and fees when it does.
