Total fire bans and your wedding: what still runs on a ban day

Adelaide weddings peak in 2 windows, October to November and March to April, and both sit squarely inside South Australia’s Fire Danger Season. That overlap is not a coincidence a couple needs to discover the hard way in week 2 of planning. A Total Fire Ban day cancels every outdoor ignition source booked for the day, but it does not touch a single indoor effect, which makes the indoor and outdoor decision one of the more consequential calls in the whole run sheet.

What a Total Fire Ban day actually stops

A declared Total Fire Ban day for the relevant district stops, outdoors:

• Sparkler send-offs and any hand-held sparkler use.
• Any open flame, including outdoor candles and unenclosed lanterns.
• Outdoor fireworks displays, which already require a licensed pyrotechnician and a CFS permit during Fire Danger Season regardless of a ban.
• Anything else with an ignition source operating in the open air on the day.

The National Wine Centre of Australia’s own published terms show exactly how this plays out at venue level: sparkler exits are permitted outside the building, but not on Total Fire Ban days in the Adelaide CBD, confirmed 24 hours before the event. Mount Lofty Botanic Garden goes further and states the garden itself follows South Australian bushfire action plans and may close at short notice on a ban day, which affects the ceremony, not only the effect booked for it.

What still runs, ban day or not

Nothing indoors is affected by a Total Fire Ban. Cold spark machines, dry ice low fog, CO2 jets and confetti or streamer cannons all fire exactly as planned inside a room, because none of them is an outdoor open-air ignition event and none of them falls inside the Fire Danger Season restrictions written for bushland and open ground. LED and neon signage is unaffected for the same reason: there is no flame or ignition source in any of it.

That is a genuine selling point for indoor effects during the exact months most Adelaide weddings are booked, not a fallback dressed up as one. A couple who books an indoor entrance and an indoor first dance has removed the single biggest weather-driven risk to their run sheet before the invitations go out.

Writing the contingency in before you need it

The couples who handle this well do 2 things at the time of booking, not in the week a ban is declared:

• Name an indoor fallback moment in the run sheet. If the send-off was planned as an outdoor sparkler tunnel, name the indoor alternative, such as a cold spark arch at the reception entrance, in the same document, so nobody is improvising on the morning of a ban.
• Get a written position on the deposit. Ask the operator, in writing, what happens to the deposit and the balance if an outdoor moment cannot go ahead because of a ban. A vague verbal assurance is not a position, and it is the difference between a calm phone call and a dispute on the day.

Both of those conversations take 10 minutes at the time of booking and are close to useless once a ban has already been declared for the week of the wedding.

Checking your district

Fire Danger Season dates are published by the CFS around October to November each year, and they are not the same date for every district. They can also be extended mid-season: the Mount Lofty Ranges district was extended to 14 May in 2025, well past when most couples would have assumed the season had ended. No date is printed on this page for exactly that reason. Check the CFS website for the specific district your venue sits in on the day itself, rather than relying on a season window remembered from a previous year or read on another site.
