Wedding photography in Adelaide, and how to brief one for effects

What it covers

Wedding photography in Adelaide is sold by coverage: the number of hours the photographer is with you, from getting ready to whatever you have decided is the last thing worth recording. The hours drive the price and almost everything else is an addition.

The part relevant to this site is technical. A cold spark fountain is roughly the brightness of a small flame against a room that has been deliberately darkened for effect. That is an enormous dynamic range in one frame, and a camera metering for the room will blow the sparks to a white smear while a camera metering for the sparks will lose the couple entirely.

A photographer who has shot it before knows to expose for the highlight, drop the shutter enough to keep the spark trails as trails rather than dots, and position so the fountain is not directly behind the couple's heads. A photographer who has not been told it is happening will be reacting, and reacting takes about 3 seconds out of a 20 second effect.

None of that requires a specialist. It requires 2 minutes of warning, which is why we send a brief.

The Adelaide market

Adelaide has one of the more saturated wedding photography markets in the country, spanning hobbyist second shooters through to established studios with a decade of work behind them. Price correlates with experience less reliably here than couples expect, and portfolio consistency is a better signal than rate.

What it costs

Everything is sold by hours of continuous coverage, and delivered image count scales at roughly 75 to 100 per hour. The densest cluster in the Adelaide market is $3,000 to $4,400 for 8 hours.

What tends to surprise couples

• Overtime is charged per 30 minutes and it is steep: $250 per half hour at James Field, $440 per hour at SvenStudios.
• The album is almost never included. Rexvil sells albums from $1,590, and James Fields album is the $650 gap between his 2 top tiers.
• A second shooter is a paid upgrade at most studios and only appears from about $4,300.
• Cheap tiers carry peak-season blackouts. SvenStudios $2,200 package is not available on Saturdays between October and April, which is most of the Adelaide wedding season.
• Turnaround varies by 6 times for similar money: James Field delivers in 2 weeks, Rexvil and Solemate quote 8 to 12.
• Travel is often free but the zones differ sharply. Little Car includes the Barossa, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills free for weddings, while SvenStudios covers 100km, which leaves the Clare Valley outside.

What to ask before you book

These are the questions that change the answer. Anyone good will have a ready reply to all of them, and the ones who hesitate are telling you something.

• Can we see one complete wedding gallery start to finish, not a highlights reel, ideally from a venue like ours?
• Have you photographed cold spark, dry ice or a sparkler exit before, and can we see those frames specifically?
• How do you shoot a dark reception: available light, on-camera flash, or off-camera lighting you set up?
• What is the contracted delivery time, and what have your last 3 weddings actually taken?
• Who owns the images, what can we print, and are the raw files available at any price?
• Are you shooting our wedding personally, and if the studio sends someone else, do we get to meet them first?
• What is your backup plan for card failure on the day, and do you shoot to 2 cards at once?

Effects it pairs with

Cold spark is the reason this site exists, and every service here is chosen because it either makes an effect land better or depends on one being timed properly.

• Cold spark machines. The effect that most rewards a briefed photographer and most punishes an unbriefed one.
• Sparkler send-offs. A sparkler tunnel is a long-exposure shot. If the photographer has packed up, you do not have one.
• Wedding videography. Effects read very differently in motion than in stills, and most couples want both.
