What it covers
Live entertainment at an Adelaide wedding spans a lot of ground: an acoustic soloist during a ceremony, a duo through canapes, a 5 piece covers band for the reception, or a roving performer between courses. They are different purchases with different constraints, and the only thing they share is that a human is playing in real time.
The practical difference from a DJ is the break. A band plays in sets, and between sets the room needs something. Some bands supply a DJ or a playlist for the gaps and some assume you have arranged it. That gap is also, usually, the only sensible window for a cake cutting or a send-off effect.
A band also has physical requirements a DJ does not: floor area, power circuits, somewhere to change, and a bump-in that can run to 2 hours. Those are venue questions as much as supplier questions.

What tends to surprise couples
- A 4 hour band usually means 4 sets of 45 minutes across a 4 to 5 hour window, so about 3 hours of actual music.
- The breaks are your problem unless you contract for them. Two Hearts Duo and The Duo DJs both price DJ continuation at $66 per half hour, which is the honest cost of not having silence every 45 minutes.
- Downtime between the ceremony and the reception is billed at $33 per half hour.
- Performing in 2 different formats in one booking, for example strings at the ceremony then a pop duo at canapes, is a $110 surcharge at Two Hearts Duo.
- A custom arrangement of a first dance song outside the repertoire is $220 with 30 days notice.
- Travel is per member rather than per booking, so a regional wedding scales with lineup size. Two Hearts Duo publishes a flat $55 to the Barossa and southern Fleurieu.
What to ask before you book
These are the questions that change the answer. Anyone good will have a ready reply to all of them, and the ones who hesitate are telling you something.
- How many sets, how long is each, and what plays during the breaks: a DJ you supply, or nothing?
- Is the lineup we hear on your demo the lineup that turns up, or is it a rotating pool of musicians?
- What floor area, ceiling height and how many separate power circuits do you need, and have you played our venue before?
- What time do you need to bump in, and does that conflict with the venue's access window or our photos?
- Will you learn our first dance song, and is that included or a rehearsal fee?
- What is the plan if a member is sick: a dep player who knows the set, or a smaller lineup on the night?
- How loud do you actually run, and have you had a venue impose a limiter or a noise cap on you before?

Is a band or a DJ better if we want effects?
A DJ is easier to cue, because the timing sits in one person's hands and the track is predictable. A band gives a bigger entrance moment. Neither is wrong, but a band needs the cue agreed with the bandleader at the sound check rather than assumed.
Can we have both a band and a DJ?
It is a common Adelaide setup: the band plays the peak of the night and a DJ covers the breaks and the late session. It costs more than either alone and it removes the awkward silences.
Do you supply the musicians?
